Tax Division

Tax Division

The Tax Division of the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office handles many of the Sheriff’s Constitutional duties such as tax collection and civil/criminal process service. In addition, there are other roles that the Clerks of the Tax Division perform daily such as vehicle inspections, issuance of concealed deadly weapon permits, and processing police reports for the public.  The division’s primary responsibility is to collect property taxes for both real estate and tangible business property. Annually, the Tax Division collects over 70 million dollars. Those collections are then properly distributed to the necessary districts which consist of the State of Kentucky Treasury and the Daviess County Fiscal Court Treasury, as well as the Daviess County Public School system, Health Department, Extension Office, and Public Library. Tax revenue is the primary source of funding for these districts thus a timely and accurate delivery of the funds is essential for their operation. Annually, DCSO will send out approximately 48,000 bills and collect 98% of those payments. The regular real estate property tax collection season continuesuntil late April of the following calendar year. However, the collection period for other “special” tax types such as public service/utility, distilled spirits, telecommunications, oil, and bank shares persists throughout each year. Sheriff's Offices in the Commonwealth of Kentucky are a ‘fee service” entity. Therefore, we derive much of our operating expenses from the fees and taxes we collect.

DCSO also generates revenue through collecting fees for various services performed. Each year, the Tax Division, with the help of the Patrol Division, performs over 9,000 vehicle inspectionsand issues hundreds of Carry Concealed Deadly Weapons permits. These and other fees, in addition to contributions from the Daviess County Fiscal Court, amass a total operating revenue budget for the entire office of approximately 6.6 million dollars in 2023. The DCSO Tax Division also processes the billing procedures for all the external revenue streams such as court transports/extraditions, court fees, paper service fees, grant contributions, and bailiff reimbursements from the state.

Lastly, the Tax Division functions as a supportive section to the other main divisions by way of personnel duties such as managing payroll and insurance records; and other various administrative responsibilities including answering phone calls, handling mail, printing records/reports, ordering office supplies, fulfilling purchase orders, and directing citizens to the proper office for their needs.

The Tax Division for the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office is open Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. (Closed on legal holidays).
