CCDW License

The Process of Getting a Kentucky Concealed Carry License

In Kentucky only residents are eligible to receive their CCDW (Concealed Carry Deadly Weapon) License. Active duty military assigned to a military posting in Kentucky can also be eligible.

The first step is to take a complete a firearms safety or training course offered or approved by the Department of Criminal Justice Training.. The course fee is set at $75 by the state. All instructors must charge exactly $75 and $25 of that fee collected by the instructor is passed on to the state.

List of all Kentucky CCDW Instructors

After the class is complete, the instructor will submit information about your pass or fail status to the Department of Criminal Justice Training.

After receiving the certificate, you can either visit the Sheriff's Office in the county you live in or you can complete your CCDW application online by uploading a PDF of the training certificate, a PDF of your Drivers License, and a PDF of your picture you want on the license. Applying online does require a user account be registered prior to the application. If you submit your application online you will pay $50 and then an additional $20 when you pick up your permit from the sheriff’s office.

The total fee if you go to the sheriff’s office will be $65 (active and retired peace officers that meet the requirements of KRS 237.110(7) are exempt from paying the application or renewal fee). A $40 check will need to be made out to the Kentucky State Treasurer and $25 (check, cash, or card) will need to be made out to the Daviess County Sheriff's Office or "DCSO". The $25 fee includes a photo, but if you provide a printed photo meeting the requirements the cost will be $20; this fee is nonrefundable once DCSO sends your application to the Kentucky State Police for issuance.

The Sheriff’s office submits your application to the Kentucky State Police who will conduct a background check. They will issue or deny your license within 90 days. You will receive a “Flash Pak” in the mail with information about picking up your permit at your sheriff’s office.

Carry Concealed Deadly Weapons (CCDW) FAQ

Q: Is there still a reason to get a CCDW license?

A: Yes, most states still require a CCDW License to carry a concealed weapon, and Kentucky's

permit-less carry laws do not apply out of state. The CCDW will also assist in weapons purchases

from licensed dealers and provide the holder with training and familiarity with gun laws. CCDW's are good for 5 years.

Q: Who can carry concealed?

A: Any person over 21 who is eligible to lawfully possess a firearm under state and federal law.

Q: Who can take my picture for my CCDW?

A: You can get your picture taken for your CCDW at the Daviess County Sheriff's office for $5.00.

Q: If I bring my own photo, what are the format requirements?

A: A photograph must meet one of the following standards:

• An original color photograph or a color photographic copy developed from the negative of an original photograph and:

Be no less than three and one-half (3 1/2) inches by four (4) inches; and

Not exceed four (4) inches by six (6) inches;

• A color photograph from a digital camera, rated for seven (7) megapixels or greater, printed on photograph quality paper; or

• An original color passport style photograph that is:

2 x 2 inches in size; and

Between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head.

The photograph shall display the full front of the head and the facial features of the applicant and not be a photograph of the applicant wearing:

Sunglasses;

A hat; or

Attire that obscures a facial feature, hair, or hairline.

Q: What is the application fee?

A: You must prepare two payments. One payment has to be a check or money order in the amount of $40.00 made payable to "Kentucky State Treasurer". The second payment(nonrefundable) can be a check, cash, or card (processing fee may apply) in the amount of $20.00 to "Daviess County Sheriff". Additionally, you will need $5.00 if DCSO takes your photo.

Q: What is the renewal fee?

A: The renewal fee is the same as the application fee. However, if the renewal is submitted after

the expiration date of the license, there is a $15.00 late fee added to the $40.00, for a total of

$55.00 payable to the "Kentucky State Treasurer".

Q: How will I be notified when it's time to renew my CCDW?

A: Four months prior to the expiration date, a written notice of expiration and renewal form will

be mailed to the licensee. IMPORTANT: If you moved during the 5 years of having your CCDW,

you will need to update your address with the Daviess County Sheriff's office free of charge. This

is so your notice goes to the correct address.

Q: How can I obtain a replacement for a lost, stolen, or destroyed license?

A: If your license is lost, stolen or destroyed, you must complete a request for a duplicate CCDW

at the Daviess County Sheriff's office and provide a check or money order payable to the

"Kentucky State Treasurer" in the amount of $15.00.

Q: How long does it take to process and receive your license?

A: The Kentucky State Police shall either issue a license or send a denial notice within 90 days.
